MUA Luxe Velvet Lip Lacquer in Reckless - Review

I've had this for quite a few weeks now but haven't actually worn it much. It was a post-college impulse purchase - it was nearly the weekend and I needed a little pick me up. I've heard a lot of hype about the Lime Crime Velveteens (£13.50 - ouch!) and I am utterly in love with one of the ones from the March 2014 'Bad Witch' Collection - the shade Wicked if anyone's interested. However, as aforementioned, these are quite pricey and I don't wear lipstick very often. I like to reserve my lip product splurges for the ever reliable Mac.
I'd heard that the new MUA velvet lip lacquers were a great dupe of the dearer Lime Crime Velveteens. For only £3 I figured why not give them a try?

First things first, the colour range disappointed me. Anyone who knows me will know that I'm not a fan of a bright lip colour on myself. The colour range can be viewed here. Only one of these colours even remotely appealed to me and that colour was Reckless, the darkest red they offered.

The velvet lip lacquers do what they say on the box. They are a pasty consistency (a bit like concealer) when applied and then they dry to be matte on the lips.
They dry pretty quickly so that's not an issue.

When they're on, they stay on FOREVER - apart from in one place: the upper half of my bottom lip, if that makes sense. After about half an hour, half of my bottom lip was completely free of the stuff while the rest of my lips were covered! I walked around for a good hour looking like that until I saw myself in a window and was mortified. (Hmm, maybe mortified is a tad dramatic..)
This might be a problem with me and not a problem with the product so I wouldn't count that as anything dramatically bad.

They are a pain in the neck to remove though, they don't come off fully unless you to scrub at them with a face wipe. Just wiping it off with a tissue made my lips blotchy and dry. The staying power is excellent if you're on a long night out. However, taking it off is very annoying. So if you're just nipping to the shops, I'd avoid an application of this beforehand.

Have you tried these before?

  1. I agree with the staying power, I swatched this on my hand and it didn't come off for ages! Good for an all nighter- not so great for day to day wear.

  4. I don't know why but I ALWAYS swatch these when I'm in superdrug, but I never buy them! And I totally get how you were mortified when you found out the lipstick had been rubbed off - I once walked around with lipstick that had settled around the dry patches on my lips, (it looked really bad) and when I finally looked in the mirror i almost died of embarrassment...
