Boots Haul #1

Good old Boots and their 3 for 2 deals. I was only in there to buy some hand cream and I came out with five other bits and bobs which I probably don’t need – a situation I’m sure many other girls can empathise with.

First stop was the ‘indulgent bathing aisle’ – but no bubble baths for me, I’m a bit of a bubble bath/bath soak hoarder and get bored of having the same scent in every bath. I hadn’t taken a look at the Soap & Glory bit for quite a while. I had a phase last year during which I constantly used their hand creams, shower gels, bubble baths and body butters and, if I’m honest, I got a little sick of their signature scents. However, they do some cute little travel-sized versions which are always useful for keeping in my bag.

I chose the Soap & Glory Endless Glove hand cream. Apparently it’s a 2 in 1 – moisture mask and hand cream. I think that’s just basically a more appealing way of saying that it’s a moisturising hand cream, which just also happens to justify that the product is 50p more expensive than their other travel sized hand cream, Hand Food. I mainly chose it because it smells different to their other products. It’s a very minty, more mature smell than the others; very “man fresh out of the shower” which makes a nice change.

A lot of my friends have been fending off colds and flus recently and I’ve found myself wishing I had some sanitiser on me as I HATE being ill and don’t want to risk a chance of infection. I only really chose this one because it’s pink and smells lovely, but it’ll be nice to have peace of mind that I won’t wake up the next day sneezing all over myself. (Lovely image, I know.)

Seeing as it was 3 for 2 across that area of Boots, I also picked up a Sanctuary Spa Salt Scrub sachet. (Steady on with the sibilance…) I’d been meaning to get one of these for ages but I’m happy to be getting it for free thanks to the 3 for 2. I have quite dry skin and thick hair so I love body scrubs for exfoliating and making sure I’m not plagued by ingrown hairs on my legs.

I couldn’t resist a little walk around the makeup section too. My liquid eyeliner, L’Oreal Superliner Ultra Precision, was on its way out so I bought the L’Oreal Superliner Black Lacquer as a replacement. I hear this is meant to be brand replacement for the much loved Carbon Gloss eyeliner that L’Oreal ceased production of a few years ago, so I am eager to see whether or not it lives up to the hype.

That said, I have also been getting into gel eyeliner recently. I’ve found that brushes with bristles render the already difficult feat of the perfect cat flick impossible. This is mainly because the bristles tend to cake if you don’t wash the brush out every day, and gel eyeliner is a massive pain to wash out and I often don’t have time to if I’m in a rush. So, I bought the Real Techniques silicone eyeliner brush. I haven’t heard any other beauty blogger talk about this yet so I was buying it based purely on the hopes that it will be easier to clean than gel from a normal soft brush.

Last, but certainly not least: I picked up a Revlon Lip Butter in the shade Macaroon. I only have one other of these (the shade, Pink Truffle) and I absolutely love it. I can’t believe how moisturising they are considering the colour payoff! I much prefer these to Baby Lips as they are completely 50/50 in pigmentation and moisturisation – definitely worth the extra £5!

Garnier Micellar Water Review

As per usual, I’m a little late to jump on the bandwagon of a beauty trend. Micellar water is no exception to this rule.

Inspired by Kayleigh of the beauty blog Couture Girl who did a post about it, I went out and bought a bottle of my own.

Until now, I’ve been using make-up wipes to remove my make-up at the end of the day. However this is inconvenient for me as I never wear a full face of makeup eg. Foundation, primer – I only do eye makeup, lipstick, highlighting, concealing, blush and very, very occasionally contouring if I’m feeling dangerous. As makeup wipes usually come in packs of about 25, it’s a bit of waste for me to use a wipe a day on just my eyes and occasionally my cheeks – the wipes aren’t cheap! The brands I usually use are the Boots Tea Tree and Witch Hazel ones (£3.39) or the St. Ives Gentle Cleansing Wipes (£3.05). Seeing as I’d go through a pack of these every 25 days, it just felt wasteful and expensive when I could just pick up a bottle of make-up remover for a similar price or a few pounds extra that could last me 10 times longer.

“Why don’t I just use liquid makeup remover?” I hear you ask. I have very sensitive eyes when it comes to liquids. They can take a beating from eye shadow, mascara and eyeliner, but when it comes to removers, my peepers are not easy to please. All of the ones I’ve tried have given me red, sore eyes.

So, you can imagine my delight when I found out that Garnier’s Micellar water is suitable for “even sensitive skin”! Feeling daring, I purchased a bottle with high hopes after all of the hype I’d heard.

I wasn’t disappointed. This is a great makeup remover for really sensitive eyes! I’m so pleased with this, finally an economical solution to removing my makeup! It’s not as efficient as some of the removers I’ve tried in the past, but it doesn’t matter because this one doesn’t give me sore eyes unlike the others, which is such a relief.

According to the packaging, the 400ml bottle contains 200 uses. Seeing as this is meant to be used all over the face and I only use it for my eyes, I will probably use quite a bit less per daily use. This means I can use this product for 200 days as opposed to the 25 days I have per packet of wipes.

And considering the price of £4.99, this is way better for my wallet than the wipes.

Thank you Garnier for bringing out a more affordable and available version of the £9.99 Bioderma one which kicked off the trend.

Have you used Micellar water? What did you think of it?

My Mac Lipstick Wishlist

I happened to be sauntering around Mac on my break earlier, intent on observing the new Fantasy of Flowers spring collection. The lipstick “Naked Bud” had caught my eye on the Mac website and several beauty blogs I follow, and I was playing with the idea of buying it depending on how it appeared in real life and the finish. Alas, the colours are never how the screen portrays them and I was disappointed. Pale lipsticks wash me out as I already have very pale skin, and lustre (as all of the Fantasy of Flowers lipsticks are) is my least favourite Mac lipstick finish.

Every time I’m by a Mac counter, I naturally gravitate to the lipstick stands. And, predictably, I end up falling in love with at least 10 shades and walking out with a sleeve tattoo of swatches.

These are my latest favourite five:

1. Dubonnet
Finish: Amplified Crème
Described by Mac as: Deepened claret
A firm Instagrammer favourite, Dubonnet is the kind of colour I hoard. I find it difficult to find deep red lipsticks that are lacking in strong purple tones, so this is perfect for me!

2. Spice It Up
Finish: Lustre
Described by Mac as: Mulled brown berry
Yes, I know I said I’m not a fan of lustre finish lipsticks. This is mainly to do with the pale range of colours available. All of the lustre ones I’ve swatched haven’t seemed pigmented at all. Considering Mac lipsticks are £15, I’d rather buy a Maybelline Baby Lips lip balm for £2.99 if I wanted something that incredibly sheer. However, this is a lovely shade and as the colour is so deep, I feel that would counteract the transparency of the finish, which will make for a lovely day-time lipstick.

3. Chili
Finish: Matte
Described by Mac as: Brownish orange-red
Matte, my favourite finish. I’ve promised myself to foray into more orange toned lip products this summer, and I think this is a good step as it is not too far from home (AKA matte dark reds) for me. Also, it’s not as terrifying as the shade Lady Danger or the intimidatingly Lucozadey shade Morange – I’m so not ready for that!

4. Cosmo
Finish: Amplified Crème
Described by Mac as: Pink coco
This is another big step for me. I’ve never bought or worn a pink lipstick in my life! I’ve heard a lot of love for shades like Hue, Velvet Teddy and Shy Girl – but I can’t wear them as they wash me out like being caught in the rain while drenched in Persil. This seems to be the middle section of the Venn diagram of Lipsticks Ellie Can Wear and Pale Pinky Nude Lipsticks.

5. Brick O La
Finish: Amplified Crème
Described by Mac as: Mid-tone Berry
I have something a little like this already – the matte finished Mehr. But I’ve really started developing an interest in sheerer finishes recently as they require far less maintenance than matte shades. (I’m not contradicting myself! Lustre is too sheer, amplified crème/glaze is perfect) This just seems like a gorgeously wearable shade and it’s suitable for all seasons which is a key factor when considering a £15 splurge!

So those are the Mac lipsticks I currently have my eye on! Obviously I want the entire counter, but I’ll settle for one or two of these next time I have enough money for one.

Which is your favourite Mac lipstick?
